A 62-year-old man, Alhaji Bamuwa Umaru has landed in the police net in Kano for attempting to secure the release of a suspected kidnapper, Yusuf Ibrahim. According to the spokesperson, of Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna who confirmed the development, said the man was arrested after he offered a bribe of N1 million to an operative of the Police for the release of the suspect. SP Haruna said the suspect upon preliminary investigation, confirmed partaking in a series of kidnappings at villages in Katsina and Zamfara States respectively. He also confessed that their syndicate group killed about Ten (10) of their kidnapped victims out of which he singlehandedly killed Two (2).

Abdullahi also said, “On 16th December 2022 at about 1400hrs, one Alhaji Bamuwa Umaru, 62 years old, of Shika town, Sabon Gari LGA Kaduna State approached the Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping Squad, State Criminal Investigation Department, Kano State Command, SP Aliyu Mohammed and offered him the sum of One Million Naira (N1,000,000:00) as bribe to secure the release of one Yusuf Ibrahim, 27 years old, of Danjibga Village, Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State, a suspected kidnapper arrested at Rijiyar Zaki Motor Park Kano. “Yusuf Ibrahim was arrested by a team of Operation Restore Peace led by CSP Usman Abdullahi, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Rijiyar Zaki Division Kano after he was identified by a driver they kidnapped along Funtua-Gusau Road, and collected the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000:00) as ransom before his release. “On preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime and further confessed to having participated in a series of kidnappings at Sheme, Yankara, faskari and Kucheri Villages in Katsina and Zamfara States respectively. He further confessed that their syndicate members killed about Ten (10) of their kidnapped victims, and he alone killed Two (2) of the victims. “Suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,�?SP Haruna however noted.

The Imo State government has reportedly appealed to the ‘Unknown Gunmen�?to resist the temptation of continuing the bloodshed. According to Politics Nigeria, the government also charged security agencies to leave no stone unturned in finding those behind Sunday’s murder of the Sole Administrator of Ideato North Local Government Area (LGA), Chris Ohizu. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the state commissioner of information and strategy, Declan Emetumba. The government’s message was in reaction to the killing of Ohizu by the Unknown Gunmen �?a catch-all for the criminal gangs carrying out frequent bouts of attacks on southeast residents and government facilities.

The statement reads: “The Government of Imo State is saddened by the brutal and cruel murder on Sunday, January 22, of the Sole Administrator of Ideato North Local Government Area, Chris Ohizu. “The chilling assassination of Mr. Ahizu in cold blood is as benumbing as it is callous. This killing falls in line with the targeting of members of the ruling APC, government officials, and their friends. “Those previously murdered in cold blood include Orlu APC LGA woman leader, Jenny Rachael Okonkwo (Iron Lady); Nze Chidi Ejiaka; Barr. Darlington Odume; Nze Nwachukwu Igboayaka; Mrs Helen Nnakwe; Collins Okey Agah, Chukwudi Dimagwu; Eddy Ofuefule; all APC chieftains from Orlu, and many others as well as Emma Mazi, former IMC chairman of Oguta LGA. “It is unfortunate that even those who are quick to shout over insecurity in the state never found their voices to condemn these cold-blooded killings in the past and are not saying anything also on the latest killing.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says 75 percent of Nigerian children aged between seven and 14 years cannot read a simple sentence or solve a basic mathematics problem. The Agency revealed this in a statement on Tuesday via its country representative, Christian Munduate, to mark this year’s International Day of Education. Munduate said: “I join the global call to ‘invest in people, prioritize education�?and urge Nigeria to deliver on the commitments made by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari at the UN Secretary General’s Transforming Education Summit in September 2022 to end the global learning crisis.

“In Nigeria, 75 percent of children aged 7 to 14 years cannot read a simple sentence or solve a basic math problem. For children to be able to read to learn, they must be able to learn to read in the first three years of schooling.�?/p>

She stated UNICEF’s commitment to the government of Nigeria, in transforming education and to prevent the loss of hard-fought gains in getting children into school, particularly poor, rural children and girls, ensuring that they remain in school, complete their education and attain their full potential. She added that UNICEF, together with partners, would continue to support federal and state governments to reduce the number of out-of-school children by providing safe, secure and violence free learning environments both in formal and non-formal settings, engaging communities on the importance of education and providing cash transfers to households and to schools. “Improve learning outcomes by expanding access to quality early childhood education, scaling foundational literacy and numeracy programmes, and offering digital skills and (http://nigeria.learningpassport.org/), life and employability skills to adolescents to enable the school to work transition.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says in 2022, it arrested 509 suspected drug traffickers in Borno State. Joseph Icha, the NDLEA commander in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the suspects comprised 500 males and nine females. The commander said large quantities of indian hemp, cocaine, heroin, tramadol, Rohypnol, diazepam and other psychotropic substances were recovered from the suspects.

According to him, 295 persons were counselled against drug abuse, while 27 others were sent to rehabilitation centres. During the period, he stated that the Borno office of the NDLEA secured 34 convictions of drug traffickers and users, while 174 cases were still pending in courts. However, Icha said that the agency was working with relevant security agencies to ensure a drug-free society. He further urged politicians to sensitise their supporters against the use of drugs and engaging in violent campaigns and warned that anyone found culpable would to face the full wrath of the law.

I have not had to exchange punches with anyone and I was never violent in the marriage. “The most painful part of the report is that I used to beat my mother. This is not only a personal attack, it is satanic. It is against everything I stand for and believe. “As a properly raised Yoruba lady, it is costly to lay your hands on your parent. As a matter of fact, my mum has been late for over 20 years. And I never raised my hands against my mother-in-law, it never happened, and it will never happen. The outbreak of the diptheria disease is gradually becoming a thing of serious concern in the ocuntry and relevant government agencies need to do more to ensure that this doesn’t get to an uncontrollable state. This is coming almost three years after the devastating outbreak of the Coronavirus in the country which claimed the lives of thousands and prompted the ordering of restriction of movements nationwide. According to the Director General, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday, the country, as at the last count on Monday, recorded 123 confirmed cases of diphtheria disease and 38 deaths in four states. The breakdown revealed by the NCDC, revealed that Kano was most ravaged with 100 confirmed cases and 32 deaths; while Lagos confirmed five infections and three deaths. In Yobe, 17 confirmed cases were recorded with three fatalities, while Osun confirmed one case but no death so far. The latest recorded number of deaths from the disease in the country, rose from 34 which was the official count on Friday, Adetifa noted that the NCDC had asked states to heighten surveillance for diphtheria and prompt reporting, adding that it was supporting states to respond and control the spread of the outbreak, as the country has trained clinicians to promptly diagnose and contain the epidemic. The Center also said it is providing states with antitoxins to treat confirmed diphtheria cases and had organised a workshop for laboratory scientists in states to increase diagnostic capacity for diphtheria. Adetifa noted that diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease, hence Nigerians should ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against the disease with the prescribed three doses of the pentavalent vaccine. Medical reseaechers say that Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. Although Diphtheria easily transmits from person to person, the use of vaccines can prevent the disease. If the disease is left untreated however, it can damage the kidneys, nervous system, and heart, if left untreated. Acording to Mayo Clinic, the disease is fatal in the advanced stages of the disease and in about three percent of cases. Even with treatment, diphtheria can be deadly, especially in children.

CAUSES:

A type of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae causes diphtheria. The condition is typically spread through person-to-person contact or through contact with objects that have the bacteria on them, such as a cup or used tissue. You may also get diphtheria if you’re around an infected person when they sneeze, cough, or blow their nose.

Even if an infected person doesn’t show any signs or symptoms of diphtheria, they’re still able to transmit the bacterial infection for up to six weeks after the initial infection.

The bacteria most commonly infect your nose and throat. Once you’re infected, the bacteria release dangerous substances called toxins which spread through your bloodstream and often cause a thick, gray coating to form in the nose, throat, tongue and airway. In some cases, these toxins can also damage other organs, including the heart, brain, and kidneys. This can lead to potentially life-threatening complications, such as: myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, paralysis, and kidney failure.

SYMPTOMS:

Diphtheria signs and symptoms usually begin 2 to 5 days after a person becomes infected. Signs and symptoms may include: A thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils; a sore throat and hoarseness; swollen glands (enlarged lymph nodes) in the neck; difficulty breathing or rapid breathing; nasal discharge; fever and chills as well as tiredness. In some people, infection with diphtheria-causing bacteria causes only a mild illness �?or no obvious signs and symptoms at all. Infected people who stay unaware of their illness are known as carriers of diphtheria. They’re called carriers because they can spread the infection without being sick themselves. Someone with poor hygiene or who lives in a tropical area, may also develop cutaneous diphtheria, or diphtheria of the skin. Diphtheria of the skin usually causes ulcers and redness in the affected area.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT:

Diphtheria is preventable with the use of antibiotics and vaccines. The vaccine for diphtheria is called DTaP which is usually given in a single shot along with vaccines for pertussis and tetanus. The DTaP vaccine is administered in a series of five shots. Before antibiotics were available, diphtheria was a common illness in young children. Today, the disease is not only treatable but also preventable with a vaccine. In rare cases, a child might have an allergic reaction to the vaccine. This can result in seizures or hives, which will later go away.

Vaccines only last for 10 years, so your child will need to be vaccinated again around age 12. Some children �?such as those with epilepsy or another nervous system condition �?may not be able to get the DTaP vaccine.

For adults, it’s recommended that you get a combined diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis booster shot once. Every 10 years afterward, you’ll receive the tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine. Taking these steps can help prevent you or your child from getting diphtheria in the future. With treatment, most people with diphtheria survive these complications, but recovery is often slow. Diphtheria is fatal about 5% to 10% of the time. Rates of death are higher in children under age 5 or adults older than age 40.

Nigerian comedian, Chioma Omeruah, popularly known as Chigul, has revealed that she is not interested in a relationship with any man below the age of 40. In the latest episode of ‘Toke Moments,�?the comedian lamented that she’s tired of being approached by men in their 20s who claim to like older women. “What are you going to be calling me? The family of a bride-to-be in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State has rejected the old N1,000 and N500 notes presented as the bride price by her suitor’s family. According to Daily Trust on Tuesday, the woman’s family were said to have demanded new naira notes because of the January 31 deadline issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria as they were not ready to buy some of the things required for the ceremony and that they did not have a bank account to deposit the money.

A family member of the suitor said, “We took money to the family of the girl we want to marry. They called me on Sunday to come and take the old currency notes back pending when we have the new naira notes.

“They said they don’t have anywhere to change the old notes. So, I want to take it to the bank pending when we get the new notes.�?/p>

Geyse was due to serve suspension carried over from last season while playing for Madrid CFF. The Catalan giants eased to victory, with Geyse Ferreira scoring the fourth goal in their dominant win. However, Osasuna claimed afterwards that Ferreira should not have been allowed to play after she was sent off for Madrid CFF in the competition last season. It has subsequently been concluded that the ban should have carried over to this term, meaning Ferreira was suspended for the Osasuna game. The Spanish FA (RFEF) have now expelled Barcelona from the cup, despite the club claiming that the suspension had not shown up on RFEF’s website ahead of the game. Osasuna will take Barcelona’s place in the quarter-finals following their complaint. Barcelona have also been fined �?001 (£884) for their actions, and have 10 days to appeal the verdict. The ruling is a devastating blow for Barcelona, who were looking to win the Copa de la Reina for the fourth successive season.

They will not be able to do so after RFEF’s decision, and fellow Spanish side Sevilla have also been eliminated for fielding a banned player. President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Senate to confirm Solomon Arase, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC). Buhari made the request in a letter read by Ahmad Lawan, the senate president on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday. The president based his request on sections 153 (1) and 154 (1) of the constitution as amended. Arase, the 18th IGP, retired as the head of the Nigeria Police about a year after President Buhari assumed office. The former IGP was appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan. In October 2020, Femi Adesina, presidential spokesperson, quoted Buhari as saying he wished he worked with him longer.

“The president told me how much he had been impressed with Arase, and how he regretted that the man spent just about a year with him,�?Adesina had said. In a separate letter, Buhari asked the upper legislative chamber to confirm the reappointment of Mahmud Isa as resident electoral commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kebbi and the new appointment of Sani Ali for the same position in Ondo.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC), has berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its suit challenging Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential candidacy in the next month’s general elections.

The PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PCO) had through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, told reporters in Abuja on Monday, that PDP proceeded to the court to demand among other things, that Tinubu be declared “ineligible to contest the Presidential election by virtue of section 137 (1) (d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).�?/p>

He also disclosed that the PDP “is filing for accelerated hearing in this case in the interest of the nation.�?/p> However, Fani-Kayode, on Monday, condemned PDP’s move to seek Tinubu’s disqualification on Channels Television’s Politics Today, describing the claims as baseless.

The APC chieftain called the PDP’s case a smokescreen to distract people from the APC’s case against the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for alleged corruption. He submitted that “This is a simple lie. Fallacious mendacity. Complete falsehood. He [Tinubu] was never convicted. The Americans themselves said that he was not indicted and neither was he convicted. “Yet, they keep bleating like little children about these things. There’s no basis in reality in it. It’s a very simple thing. For us, this a civic duty. “We need to be responsible and it is our duty to expose Atiku for what he really is and we will continue to do that. They have tried to respond by bringing all manner of insults, all manner of fake allegations without any credible evidence.

“If you have that kind of evidence, present it before the public and let us see. Then we will consider what you’re saying. So, then stop throwing bricks where you have nothing inside them to carry weight.�?/p>

Festus Keyamo, the chief spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has slammed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its latest move to disqualify the ruling party’s presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying Nigerians have rejected the PDP. Information Nigeria earlier mentioned that the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PCO) through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said it has taken its case to the court to have Tinubu declared ineligible to contest the February 25 presidential election by virtue of section 137 (1) (d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). In a chat with reporters in Abuja on Monday, Ologbodiyan said Tinubu’s alleged conviction for narcotic offenses by a United States court makes him ineligible to contest. He said the PDP PCO also wants the court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately delist Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the APC or any other political party and erase his name from all materials relating to next month’s election.

According to Ologbondiyan, allowing Tinubu to contest in the forthcoming elections is “fundamentally illegal, invalid and must be expunged immediately.�?/p> Keyamo, however reacting to the development in a statement late Monday, said the opposition party was waking up rather too late and bereft of originality and ideas. He said: “This is so laughable that Nigerians are beginning to see that these are remorseless people; leopards that cannot change their skin. Instead of Atiku to face the cameras, shed some tears and apologise to the nation for abusing his office as VP (vice president) with SPVs, his reply in summary is, ‘what-about-you-too?�?This is disastrously sad. “Why did they wait all these months until we filed before they are now rushing to court? I challenged them more than two months ago, yet, they did nothing. It shows a team that is lacking in originality, lacking in ideas and lacking in vision.

“It is just an attempt to create a counter suit to our own. Unfortunately for them, Nigerians have seen through them already: SPV advocates that are trying to turn the tide of public opinions. Nigerians have decided; Nigerians have rejected them.�?/p>

A six-month-old baby boy has died in his sleep after his young mother allegedly gave him an overdose of medication in order to go clubbing. The incident happened at Quarter Nine in Likomba, a neighbourhood in Tiko on Monday, January 23, 2023. According to local sources, the mother wanted to go clubbing so she allegedly gave the baby drugs said to be Tramadol to make him sleep for hours and then locked him up in the room. The mother of the young woman said this wasn’t the first time that she drugged the child and left him unattended. A Cameroonian reporter wrote, “The first time the mother caught her drugging the child, she interrogated her but she told her they were mere pills,” a source said.

“This lady you see here committed an abomination last night in Likomba, Tiko. Despite having a newborn baby of few months old in hand, she wanted to go clubbing with friends.” “The innocent child was the only thing standing in her way as she couldn’t take him to the club. So what did this girl do? She decided to give him Tramadol so he can fall deep asleep. This way she can go party with her friends “She gave her the Tramadol and locked the baby inside the house. She returned home this morning only to find out the baby died as a result of the hard drugs she gave him “Likomba inhabitants descended on her and got her well beaten. Forces of law and order intervened and as of now, the girl is in detention. The baby has been buried. May the soul of the innocent baby rest in peace.” See photos below:

Nigerian singer, Ahmedu Obiabo, popularly known as Blackface, has claimed that a song of his has been stolen by an artiste who spent $165,000 to shoot the musical video for the song. The former member of PlantashunBoiz in a tweet on Tuesday slammed the artiste for not seeking approval before remixing his song.

Blackface wrote, “You spend $165k dollars to shoot musical video for your artist Una no fit use 100naira call the owner of the song before una remix am Una dey form say una smart I believe E better make una do the right thing because this one I no go sorry for una ! I dey come !�?/p>

“They love music I know, but does it give them the right to sample remake or remix works I have already released without proper permission? The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Government of Benin Republic have intercepted and destroyed five containers of unregistered drugs including Tramadol worth N95 billion. The agency, in a statement on Monday, January 23, 2023, said the development followed four-and half years of monitoring with the help of the Beninese Government. “Following an intelligence report from the Presidency, Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye in August 2018 directed the Director of Ports Inspection Directorate, Prof. Samson B. Adebayo on the intention of some unscrupulous importers to ship thirty-one (31) containers of unregistered pharmaceutical products including tramadol 200mg and above from India. The containers were labelled building materials and for bonded terminal,” the statement read.

NAFDAC destroys unregistered drugs including Tramadol worth N95bn in joint operation with Benin Republic. The agency said although some of the containers were found to contain building materials, others were found to contain unregistered drugs. “One container was transferred to the Cotonou port in the Republic of Benin, while the remaining four were initially diverted to the Tema Port in Ghana but later diverted them to Cotonou having met resistance from Ghana Food and Drug Agency that NAFDAC already contacted for collaboration to stop the four (4) containers,�?the agency said. “Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, then liaised with the Ambassador of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin at the time, His Excellency, Kayode Oguntuase, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the port authority in the Republic of Benin effected the seizure of the five containers on the request of NAFDAC. “His successor, His Excellency Olukayode O. Aluko, never relented in his effort at ensuring that all these five (5) containers are released to NAFDAC for destruction. “Meanwhile, the other twenty-four containers, some entity took the case to court in Benin that the containers should be brought back to Nigeria. This took about one year plus but Ambassador Aluko stayed on the case until the court made the judgement that the containers can be destroyed in Benin. “Alas, the government of the Republic of Benin eventually agreed to engage with the Nigerian counterparts to carry out the destruction of these containers in Cotonou.” See photos below:

A former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Najaatu Mohammed, has alleged that the candidate of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, shared money to the party’s governors to influence his emergence as the presidential flag bearer of the party. Mohammed who had last Saturday announced her resignation from the APC campaign organization and the ruling party stated that her conscience would not allow her to continue in the APC PCC. She claimed that Tinubu was too sick as he could not hold a teacup when she visited him in London some time ago. She also said the gaffes and blunders trailing Tinubu’s campaign appearances were an indication of ill health, and the fact that he was incapable of presiding over the affairs of the nation. The former APC member, who said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would have been a better choice given Tinubu’s poor health, however, dismissed supporters of the presidential hopeful as greedy and interested only in his money. In an interview with ThisDay on Monday, Mohammed said she was shocked, when Tinubu told her he didn’t have a blueprint for the North but instead, asked her to itemise what she thought should be the needs of the north. Disclosing that the party primary election was a cash and carry exercise, she said, “You see, there is nothing like democracy in this democratic system. The whole thing is a hoax. I will tell you for instance what happened in their primary election. People were given ballot papers with Asiwaju written on it. That was what happened and we saw a clip in which governors were collecting money. It’s so shameful. It’s a disgrace. “Yes collecting money, sharing money given to them by Asiwaju. It is such a disgrace. It is the first time that I have heard or seen such. At least in this dispensation, I have been in politics for decades, I was born into it. But this is the first time that a presidential candidate will be sponsoring governors. “This is what is happening. So, you see Asiwaju is synonymous with money. So, for God’s sake, if all it takes is money, then, what else will he do when he takes over power? It’s for him to retrieve his money. It is not even about Egbe Omo Oduduwa, Osinbajo is even more Egbe Omo Oduduwa than Tinubu.

“He’s a Professor, he’s brilliant. For few weeks he was given to govern this country, he did a great job. But the Lagos-Ibadan press, they said all sort of things against him. Tinubu controls the strongest propaganda machine in this country, which is the Lagos–Ibadan press.�?/p>

The former director of the APC campaign in charge of civil society, said the candidate’s supporters were a greedy lot only after Tinubu’s war chest. “Let me tell you why they are following Asiwaju, they know that he’s incapable. They know that he can’t decipher, they know that there is something seriously wrong with his brain. It is like they say in Hausa, somebody will hold the horn, and you will be milking. So, all of these people talking all these nonsense know that he’s incapable, know that he’s handicapped but they also know that he’s already a cabal that they can depend on for the piece of a pie. “No more, no less. I want to tell you that I have not spoken to anyone, both in or outside APC from up north that I know that has told me or that believes Asiwaju is capable. But all they are saying is that you know we have to get something out of it. “The problem is extreme selfishness. All these people that you are talking about are thinking of themselves as individual, their personal interest; they don’t have the country at heart. That is why I said I have to follow my conscience because I cannot afford…in fact, to be silent is criminal. This is my position. Anyone that refuses to talk when they are supposed to talk is either a hypocrite or a coward or both. So, that is why I took the position I took. “These people that you are talking about, in Hausa, we say they are the plugs from north to south. But they are an insignificant minority and the voice of the generality of Nigerians that they have allowed themselves to be pulled by the nose, some out of ignorance, some out of tribal or religious sentiments. “Let me tell you what our prophet said, when they said Muslim-Muslim ticket,…because Islam is explicit on the question of leadership. What it says is a chosen atheist is better than an unjust Muslim. The first law chosen by God is the law in which Allah himself put on himself. The first law was that if he had denied himself the right to oppress, that is the law and then he went on to say that he had denied injustice within my creation. So, what are we talking about, what the hell about Muslim-Muslim,�?she said. However, the APC-PCC, in a statement, last night, by the Adviser on Public Affairs, Tinubu Media Office, Mahmud Jega, said Mohammed deceived the gullible public by claiming that she resigned. According to Jega, “The Asiwaju/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council received with amusement the hasty ‘resignation�?of Hajiya Naja’atu Mohammed from her position as Director of Civil Society Organisations just before she was sacked for incompetence, quarrelsomeness and after being uncovered to be a mole planted in our winning campaign in order to leak sensitive information to our desperate opponents.

Residents of Ekiti State have decried to Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Financial Institutions over its failure to circulate and dispense the new naira notes amidst the deadline. With less than a week to the deadline for the phasing out of the old naira notes, financial institutions in Ekiti are still dispensing the old notes. Officials of some of the banks in the state who spoke under anonymity complained of scarcity of the new naira notes. Speaking with some of the customers of the financial institutions, they lamented that banks ought to have stopped loading old notes in their ATM since it would not be accepted as legal tender by end of this month. A Public Affairs Analyst and former Commissioner for Information in Ekiti State, Mr Lanre Ogunsuyi, called for synergy between CBN and commercial banks on how to ensure that the policy did not affect Nigerians especially those living in the rural areas. Another concerned citizen, who is a POS Operator, Mrs Bukola Ajisafe expressed disatisfaction over the development and called on the apex bank to ensure that commercial banks comply with its directive by not loading the old notes in their ATM.

The CBN had said that there was no going back on its decision to stop the use of the old naira notes by thirty first of this month.

Fire has destroyed the Nodu Okpuno Mata foam depot in Anambra. This was contained in a statement signed by the Director/Fire Chief of Anambra Fire Service, Mr Martin Agbili, and made available to newsmen in Onitsha on Monday evening. According to him, at about 5.39 p.m., the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call of fire outbreak at Mata foam depot, NODU, Okpuno. “We immediately deployed our fire truck and our brave firefighters to the fire scene. The fire fighting operation was very successful as we were able to fight, stop, control and extinguished the fire to a standstill,�?he said.

The fire chief said that they were able to save a lot of mattresses in the depot. “We also saved all the surrounding residential homes around the fire scene. “We want to use this medium to thank the general public who assisted us during the operation and also those that put the call across to us�? Agbili stressed that January and February are the peak of harmattan when the state usually experiences a great number of fire outbreaks.

Ahead of 2023 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia has cautioned its staff members to shun sharp practices during the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) distribution.

According to INEC’s Head, Public Affairs Unit in Abia, Mr Bamidele Oyetunji, issued the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba on Monday. Oyetunji said that the commission frowns at receiving or demanding gratification from the public while performing their duties. ”Our staff members do not need to search for anything on the internet. “All they need to do is to give people their voter cards. ”Anybody whose card is not found or those with challenges should be given a note to verify online by themselves,�?Oyetunji said. However, some residents of Aba have accused some INEC officials of collecting N500 from prospective voters before issuing them their cards. Mrs Ijeoma Bernard said she was asked to pay N500 as “verification fee�?before she was given her card. Also, Nwanyioma Enyinnaya said that the INEC officials refused to attend to her because she could not pay. Mrs Iheanaetu Roseline expressed worries that her card could not be found after the stress she passed through to get registered.

Meanwhile, at Osisioma and Aba North Local Government Areas, residents turned out en masse to collect their cards. The Abia Government declared Monday and Tuesday public holiday to enable workers to collect their PVCs ahead of the General Elections.

The Ooni of Ife, while addressing newsmen, advocated stiffer punishment for human traffickers, saying tackling the menace must go beyond just setting aside a day to celebrate ‘human trafficking day�? Ogunwusi said he and his queen, Aderonke Ademiluyi, have been advocating compulsory girl-child education through the Queen Moremi Ajasoro Initiative to tackle trafficking of the girl-child. Ooni, who spoke through Sanni Omogbolabo, the Mother of Culture in Ife, said: “Over the years, I have taken it upon myself to fight this scourge to a standstill, and through the Queen Moremi Ajasoro Initiative, see to the overall growth, wellbeing and development of our children.

“I believe in addressing human trafficking and slavery among our people, as attention should not only be called to it only on days set aside to celebrate the day, but rather, concerted efforts towards engaging key stakeholders; as often as possible. “To this end, a nationwide campaign on putting an end to human trafficking and slavery is being anchored by Queen Moremi Ajasoro Initiative and thousands of girls and women were recipients of Queen Moremi Ajasoro Initiative entrepreneurship grants. “No doubt, if the girl-child is neglected in society, it might result in the destruction of the entire nation. These girls will then be exposed to all manner of social vices. “It is my hope that both the public and private sectors will continually invest in the girl-child for sustainable development in the country. “If we don’t invest in the girl-child, we are not investing in our nation. For me, the education of the girl-child, remains paramount. Every girl-child should have more opportunities to go to school, and that is why the Queen Moremi Ajasoro education grant was set up to help indigent students,�?the monarch said.

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has assured the State will be safer in the hands of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Siminialayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. Wike revealed this yesterday at Kelechi Nwogu Legacy Stadium, venue of the campaign flag-off rally of the Rivers State PDP in the Omuma Local Government Area. According to him, both the PDP governorship candidate and his deputy are seasoned technocrats with requisite experience about the workings of government, and have the capability to consolidate on the gains made already while continuing in the same development trajectory. The G5 leader recalled when he asked Omuma people to vote for him as governor in 2015 and 2019, he made promises that had all been fulfilled in terms of delivering of development projects to the area. He stated that he has returned to ask for electoral support from them for Fubara because such support will secure more infrastructure development for them. Wike noted that this was the first time Rivers State would be blessed with two technocrats who have such wealth of experience, now ready to steer the affairs of state.

He said so many people have started to come to them with promises thinking that Rivers people have forgotten how they shared money meant for development when they had the opportunity to preside over the state affairs. “The money that should have been used to develop Omuma and some other local governments of Rivers State was siphoned by Cole and his master. That is why we have charged them to court because we will not allow anybody who stole our money to come to power through backdoor,�?he alleged. The governor insisted that the likes of such persons cannot be allowed to preside over the state because Rivers people will deliver votes to those who have promised, fulfilled such promises and delivered projects. “Nobody should be afraid of whatever is going on in the country. We cannot be intimidated. Nobody can take away this flag away from us. We are not second class citizen to anybody and we must continue to stand firm and make sure our state is protected,�?he said. Wike also urged them to collect their permanent voters cards (PVCs) because it is their power to resist those who failed in their vain attempt to use the military and the police to rig the 2019 general election. “Our power is our PVCs. We will use it well on February 25 and March 11. Let me tell you, this election will not be like 2019 when they used soldiers and used police. It will not happen again,�?he said.

The Nigerian Army says gunmen disturbing the peace of the South-East region of the country cannot stop the 2023 general elections in the region because the Army has greater ways of tackling them. The Commanding Officer, 24 Support Engineering Regiment, Abakaliki, Lt. Col. Sunday Atomode, who said this a media in a chat with newsmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, maintained that the armed criminals could not overpower the military and other security agencies during the elections. Atomode, who said the military already had plans to ensure there were peaceful and successful general elections in Ebonyi State and other parts of the country, was quoted as saying, “We have superior weapons and superior strategy to tackle the miscreants. “Let me say this, elections will hold in Ebonyi State peacefully. Those saying that there won’t be elections in Ebonyi State and South East do not have what it takes to suppress the military and other security agencies in the state.

“They do not have anything to suppress us. We have superior manpower, we have superior weapons and superior strategy to tackle the miscreants. We are assuring the people that the election will come and go. We have plans already for a peaceful and successful election in the state.�?/p>

The Officer further disclosed that since he assumed command in Ebonyi State, the military in joint operations with sister agencies, had raided and destroyed many training camps of miscreants and assured that the tempo would continue until a secured environment is achieved for the citizenry. He said, “Since I took over command on August 31st 2022, we have charted a new course for inter-agency collaboration in Ebonyi State. We have been able to work effectively with the DSS and the Nigeria police to ensure we have security in place in the State. “One of those measures we have put in place is joint patrol with the men of the Nigeria police and the DSS. We have ensured that this comes on a routine basis. And we have charted a course for the sustenance of momentum in that regard. “So, a lot is being done and alot will be done. It’s a steady and gradual process and I believe, with time, we shall get there.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said he will accept the outcome of the 2023 presidential election should in case he loses. Kwankwaso, who stated this on Monday at a town hall meeting with staff and students of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), maintained that the polls must be free and fair. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has described as false an online report claiming that it endorsed the tenure elongation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba. The rebuttal was contained in a statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations (PSC), Ikechukwu Ani, which was obtained by newsmen on Monday. Noting the alleged claim he said, “The online publication in a supposed interview with a commissioner representing the police in the commission, AIG Lawal Bawa, stated that the PSC commissioner confirmed that the commission is not against the extension of the tenure of the IGP. It went further to quote the commissioner as saying, “if the IGP feels that it will affect effective monitoring of the elections, let him write to the president for their extension, we (the PSC) have no objection�?

Ani added that the commissioner has since denied making such a statement, stressing that he was obviously misquoted. He added, “According to him, he told the online publication that it was the prerogative of Mr. President to decide. “The commission, therefore, wishes to state that it has not endorsed any tenure elongation for the current IGP. Workers of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO), have called off the industrial strike they embarked upon in the early hours of Monday. The industrial action caused chaos at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos from 4am on Monday, leaving passengers, thousands of travelers stranded. It was declared at the instance of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association (ATSSSAN) which said its members have been in negotiations with the management of NAHCO for a review of current salaries since June, 2022 without any headway. A memo issued by the unions read: “As the ultimatum issued by our unions has gone unheeded and the management continues to play on our intelligence through scheduling of purposeless meetings, we have come to the conclusion that the management is clearly decided against hearkening to our cried for fairness and equity, despite overwhelming evidence in support of our demand.

“In view of the above, NUATE and ATSSSAN have no choice than to take definite steps to press home our demands. In the above regard, all staff of NAHCO are hereby directed to withdraw all services with effect from Monday, January 23. This action shall be indefinite until otherwise directed by the secretariats of the unions.�?/p> Following the directive given by the aviation unions, NAHCO staff who handle check-ins, boarding and ramp services for several international and local airlines including Air France/KLM, Qatar, Ethiopian Airlines, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Air and Air Peace, among others, downed their tools on Monday morning

However the issue was resolved 14 hours later, where they agreed to withdraw the suit it filed against the unions at the National Industrial Court in a meeting held at NAHCO Aviance House, Ikeja. Also, a communique signed by management of the Company, unions�?representatives and regulatory agencies, resolved that the unions call off the strike and all staff resume work immediately. The parties further agreed that negotiations on staff welfare would resume on Jan. 25 and be concluded within the week. It was also agreed that no member of staff would be victimised for participating in the strike action. Sola Obabori, Executive Director, NAHCO, apologised to passengers and clients who were affected by the strike action and expressed appreciation for the understanding they showed. He reiterated the company’s commitment in providing excellent customer experience to its clients and the large community of airline passengers who are dependent on its services.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has been ordered to “immediately” charge Tukur Mamu to court if any offense related to his alleged involvement in ransom negotiation on behalf of terrorists is discovered. This is according to Justice Edward Andow, who preside over Kaduna State High Court 12. Recall that Mamu has been with the DSS since his arrest in Cairo, Egypt on September 6, 2022 on his way to Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj together with some of his family members. The lead Counsel to Tukur Mamu, Muhammad Sani Katu (SAN) told journalists after the court session on Monday that he was satisfied with the court order, and expressed the belief that the DSS will obey the order.

According to him, ”the matter came up today (Monday), we served the DSS and the Attorney General, we started the processes. And the Judge gave the order, directing them to charge him to court immediately for any offence, if any, they may have discovered. That is our target. The word used by the Judge is immediately, immediately differs from soon. “Don’t be surprised if by tomorrow or next or within the week he is being charged to court if there is any offence, but let me come in here by telling you that one must commend the DSS for the manner that they have been handling this matter. We have gone to see our client severally, he has some health challenges, but they have been taking care of that. They have taken him to hospital, they made so much payment towards his health. But our position is not about his health, not just about holding him there. “The law is very clear, the essence of his arrest is the belief that he had committed an offence, and how do you know that he had committed an offence is to commence an investigation. And once you finished the investigation and you did not find him wanting, you release him, and if you find him wanting, the law says don’t keep him in detention, charge him to court. That is just the fundamentals. “As far as we are concerned the order to keep him for 60 days elapsed in October last year. They have the right to renew, but as it stands now we are not aware as to whether they have renewed or not. They, first they are seeking detention, they can go on their own, but the second time there is the need to have the permission of the Attorney General. They can do that without us on notice. But the fact remains that in an attempt to protect the system we are operating, once you obtain an order against somebody you notify him. If you have contact with the persons you notify them, or at least the general public because this is a matter that certain persons are being concerned. “When they did that of the 60 days they came out to tell the whole world that they have obtained detention order. Which is okay. Now the 60 days have elapsed, nobody knows whether they have gotten additional extensions or not. That is why we say the best we could do is to go to court. We are not saying they must release him. Take him to court for determination. After court determination, we will know whether he will go to jail or be freed. “If you recall, there was an arrest of our client, Tukur Mamu in Cairo on his way to Saudi Arabia with some members of his family. He was moved to Abuja and since then he remains in detention. We got to know that there is an order by the DSS to detain him for 60 days. At the expiration of the 60 days, we thought the next thing they should do is to charge him to court for any offence. As it stands now he has not been charged. And the best we can do for the system is to file legal enforcement wherein our plea which is very clear; release him on administrative bail, if there is anything call administrative bail. Alternatively, if you found out that he has committed any offence, charge him to court,” Katu said.

Three people have been confirmed dead, while sixteen others have been hospitalised in Amaogwugwu, a community in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, following a cholera outbreak. President General of the community, Kelechi Uwaoma, who confirmed this to journalists said two people died in their homes while one died in the community health centre, adding that those hospitalised were receiving treatment. He added that some persons have recovered and have been discharged from the health centre.

Uwaoma disclosed that the cholera outbreak was a result of suspected contamination of the Ikwu river which was the only source of water in the community. He said officials of the state ministry of health, World Health Organization and other interventionist agencies have visited the community and donated drugs to the community health centre to complement the ones already procured to treat victims and expressed delight that the situation was under control. Uwaoma said, “We have intensified sensitisation of the people on ways of preventing further spread which includes keeping the environment clean, drinking clean water, and safe preservation of food items. “We also directed that the affected persons be treated at no cost and residents should immediately report suspected cases to the health facility.” The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Osuji, said his ministry is monitoring the situation and had deployed officials and drugs to the community so as to help stabilize affected persons and that he will be visiting the community today with the state epidemiology team.

No fewer than eight Arsenal fans have been arrested in the Uganda city of Jinja after celebrating the Gunners’ win against Manchester United in the English Premier League. The fans were spotted wearing the club’s red jersey and carrying a symbolic trophy to celebrate 3-2 victory at Emirates Stadium yesterday. Police said they didn’t have a permit to hold the procession which is a public order offence. Arsenal fans were travelling in a convoy of five vehicles on Monday morning when they were intercepted by police. One of them was carrying a trophy they had bought at a local store. “I don’t know what we have done but we were simply celebrating our victory over rivals Manchester United,” Arsenal fan Baker Kasule was quoted as saying by the local Daily Monitor news site.

James Mubi, the regional police boss and a self-declared Arsenal fan, told the BBC he had not reviewed the fans’ charges but wondered why they were celebrating when only half of the matches in the season had been played.

The suspected gunman wanted for killing 10 people and leaving at least 10 injured during the Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, has been found dead after shooting himself, police officials announced Sunday night, January 22. The alleged mass murderer, identified as Huu Can Tran, a 72 year old man, turned a gun on himself inside a cargo van following a stand-off with law enforcement, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during an evening press conference outside Monterey Park City Hall. The sheriff said Tran, who is accused of shooting up a Monterey Park ballroom following a Lunar New Year celebration, acted alone and officials are still investigating a motive. Five men and five women were slain during the rampage at the ballroom dance club, about eight miles outside downtown Los Angeles. Ten others were wounded and seven are still being treated at local hospitals as of Sunday evening �?their conditions ranging from stable to critical, officials said.

The “assumption�?is that the victims were “probably�?of Asian descent, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a press briefing. At 10:20 a.m., police in Torrance, California spotted a white van matching the suspect vehicle description. They followed the van into a shopping mall parking lot, where they heard a single gunshot coming from inside the van. The local police officers retreated and called in tactical teams to respond. Armored tanks and a bomb squad came towards the van before noon local time, in what became a more than hour-long standoff. Just before 1 p.m. local time, a SWAT team opened the passenger door of the vehicle, and then the side doors. Photos showed a man slumped over in the driver’s seat who investigators confirmed was the shooting suspect. Luna’s department earlier released a wanted poster of the suspect, showing him in glasses and wearing a dark winter beanie with a white design, leather jacket and glasses. He also didn’t rule out the possibility of a second suspect, but provided no evidence there might be one.

Chester Chong, chairman of the Chinese Chamber Commerce of Los Angeles, said he heard that the shooting was related to a domestic violence issue, telling The Post, “I was told the wife was invited to the Lunar New Year Party and the husband was not.�?/p>

Luna said the department is purposefully shielding some information from the public, in part because someone called a hospital with some of the injured victims and threatened to “finish the job.�?/p> The sheriff said officials found a handgun as well as evidence linking Tran to the Lunar New Year massacre inside the van. Investigators recovered an assault pistol that had an extended large capacity magazine attached to it from a second location, where no shots were fired. The mass murder was the deadliest in the US since the massacre at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school that killed 21 people last May, and was the fifth such horrifying incident in the country in the year 2023.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians on excessive fasting on religious grounds, stating it can destroy the kidney. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General (DG) of NAFDAC, who stated this in Abuja during a briefing, urged Nigerians to fast with common sense or pay with their kidneys. The NAFDAC DG also urged Nigerians to desist from patronising hawkers and street-corner sellers of medicines. Adeyeye said: “Kidney failure, liver damage, others, I don’t know how many have died in Nigeria due to substandard medicines and unwholesome foods.

“However, we are a very religious country, muslims and christians, we fast a lot, and it is part of the kidney problem. Because your body has to have homeostasis balance, meaning the water level in your body must be enough to make your organs to function. Some people will fast for 10, 20 days, without drinking a lot of water. The kidney is being punished. “Now, if you put chemicals in it, it triples in an exponential manner, with damage to the kidneys. This is because the kidney does not have enough water to dilute and filter.

“I fast but I fast with common sense. We have to fast with common sense, if not, we will pay it with our kidneys. Also, do not buy medicines from hawkers and corner stores. But medicines from pharmacies.�?/p>

The mutilated body of a prominent Cameroonian journalist was found dead on Sunday, near Yaounde five days after he was abducted by unidentified assailants, the press union and a colleague said on Sunday. Martinez Zogo was managing director of Yaounde-based private radio station Amplitude FM and the star host of a popular daily program, Embouteillage (Gridlock). On the air, the 51-year-old regularly tackled cases of corruption, not hesitating to question important personalities by name. Zogo served a two-month prison sentence for criminal defamation in 2020, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported. Martinez Zogo was kidnapped on Jan. 17 by unknown assailants after trying to enter a police station to escape his attackers, media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said. Zogo had recently been talking on air about a case of alleged embezzlement involving a media outlet with government connections, RSF said.

“Cameroonian media has just lost one of its members, a victim of hatred and barbarism,” Cameroon’s journalists�?trade union said in a statement. “Where is the freedom of the press, freedom of opinion and freedom of expression in Cameroon when working in the media now entails a mortal risk?” His colleague, Charlie Amie Tchouemou, editor-in-chief of Amplitude FM, confirmed Zogo’s death and his abduction. According to RSF, Zogo’s badly damaged car was found outside a police station in a suburb of the Cameroonian capital Yaounde on Tuesday. “There are many grey areas regarding the circumstances of his brutal abduction,” Sadibou Marong, head of the sub-Saharan Africa office of RSF, told AFP. “The authorities must launch a rigorous, thorough and independent investigation to establish the full chain of responsibility and the circumstances that led to this sad event,” Marong said. Cameroon’s national journalists’ union condemned a “heinous assassination” and urged media workers to wear black on January 25 as a sign of mourning. “Although Cameroon has one of the richest media landscapes in Africa, it is one of the continent’s most dangerous countries for journalists, who operate in a hostile and precarious environment,” RSF says in its Cameroon country profile. The International Council of Nurses on Monday, expressed deep concern over Britain’s decision to hire nurses from less developed nations as a temporary solution to its own underinvestment in the field. The International Council of Nurses said wealthy countries recruiting nursing staff from some of the world’s most fragile health systems was extremely hard to justify and perhaps should be stopped entirely.

The ICN said seven or eight wealthy countries �?notably Britain, the United States and Canada �?were driving around 80 percent of international nurse migration, to try to address their domestic shortages. “We are very concerned by some of the examples,�?ICN chief executive Howard Catton told a press conference organised by the UN correspondents association in Geneva. He cited talks between Britain and Ghana whereby London will pay Accra £1,000 ($1,240) per nurse recruited. “That, in no way, goes anywhere near recognising the true value of the training costs of that nurse, or the loss to the Ghanaian health system,�?he said.

When adding in experience in the field, “I’d expect to see £50,000 as a price to compensate for that experience at least �?if not more. £1,000 is woefully short.�?/p> The ICN said international recruitment focused largely on experienced, specialised nurses, rather than the “myth�?that only newly-qualified nurses were being targeted. “That creates a serious deficit in expertise in countries that cannot afford to lose their more experienced nurses. That has really been a serious concern,�?said ICN president Pamela Cipriano.

“When you take those nurses out of the clinical environment, you truly have a brain drain.�?/p> She said countries had to adopt a strategy of becoming self-sufficient in producing nurses. “We’re appealing to the ethics of countries that health is a global issue,�?she said.

“We don’t want to see some countries thrive and others hurt.�?/p> Catton also highlighted Britain’s agreement with the Nepalese government on nurse recruitment, noting that the ratio of nurses to the British population is around 80 to 10,000, while in Nepal it is nearer 20. “That is already taking nurses from a very low base, where access to healthcare is limited,�?he said.

“That sort of recruitment can mean that a service simply isn’t provided.�?/p> “If you’re a government who is relying on international recruitment as a quick fix to shortages because you haven’t invested enough, be very, very careful about that,�?Catton said.

“For probably the 45 or 50 most vulnerable countries around the world,�?he said, “there is a very strong case that�?there shouldn’t be any recruitment.�?/p> Founded in 1899, the Geneva-based ICN is a federation of more than 130 national nursing associations representing 28 million nurses worldwide.

Prof. Folagbade Aboaba, an assistant general overseer for the Redeemed Christian Church of God, passed away at the age of 90. Aboaba passed shortly after a brief illness, according to a statement made by Prof. Folarin Alonge, national chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Agricultural Engineers. Aboaba was one of the closest allies of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. Alonge described the late scholar as one of the founding fathers of the institute who was always passionate about the growth of Agricultural Engineering and mechanisation in the country.

He wrote: “One of our Fathers in the profession, Prof. Fola Aboaba, has gone home. He was a Professor of Professors of Professors. “Prof Folagbade Olajide Aboaba was an Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Engineering at University of Ibadan and the Pioneering Dean of the Faculty of Technology (1976-1982). I was privileged to be taught by him at both undergraduate and Masters class. He was a mentor to several people and professors. “He was the Executive Secretary of Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (1992-1998). He was the founding Pro Chancellor of Redeemers University (2005-2013). He was the Chairman of Governing Council of Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Lagos (1976-1979). “He died at the age of 90. “I had a chat with him on Sept 15, 2023, when we were preparing of NIAE conference in Asaba (Delta State). His response to my asking about him is ‘Thank you. Ageing slowly but fine. Glory to God. God bless you�? Baba was a lovely, cheerful and good man. “He was one of the founding members of the NIAE. He played significant role with other fathers in establishment of National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization, Ilorin. He made substantial contributions to the growth of NSAE (NIAE). His last major public lecture he delivered for NIAE was when we were invited to Presidential villa, Abuja in 2004 by the then Vice President. Late Prof John Ohu was the NIAE National Chairman then. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has disclosed that it has made all plans to surprise the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his supporters in the oncoming 2023 general elections with the overwhelming votes it will get. The declaration was made on Monday by the spokesperson of the Kano APC Gubernatorial Campaign Council, Comrade Muhammad Garba, who is also the state’s commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs. He stated that the ruling APC is getting overwhelming votes from the electorate as revealed by the indicators on the ground. “Yes Kwankwaso is from Kano, he was a governor, a former minister and a senator, of course, he will get some votes, I am not saying he is going to get zero votes, of course, he will get some votes, but APC will defeat him in the presidential race, and will defeat all other political parties by God’s grace in the gubernatorial race as well.

“That is why we are saying we are going to have a wide margin in the coming election�?he declared. Muhammad, who spoke extensively on the alleged rigging pattern of the NNPP stated that plans have been concluded to ensure that there is no room for an inconclusive election in the State in 2023. He dismissed claims by a section of the public he described as uninformed, that the APC is planning for an inconclusive election in order to win, saying the inconclusive election is a constitutional provision and not a rigging method initiated by the APC. He added that the indicators on the ground have placed the leading opposition in the state, the NNPP, in third place position in the coming elections. “We are really on the ground and will not allow what happened in 2019 that led to the inconclusive election to be repeated. “It was not our fault that the election was inconclusive. People fail to understand that an inconclusive election is a constitutional issue. Is not our making, is not that we were happy the election was inconclusive. Is not only in Kano that an inconclusive election took place. “It was a constitutional issue that led to the inconclusive, we were not happy that it happened. It was such that God saw our good intention. Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has approved two free days for public and civil servants, including primary and secondary school students in the state to enable them retrieve their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2023 general elections in the coming month. Disclosing this in a statement issued in Abakaliki on Monday, Uchenna Orji, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, said the work free days are Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th.

The Federal Road Safety Corps said it will conduct the certification of drivers and vehicles to be used for the forthcoming elections across the country. This was according to an official of the commission, Mr Oga Ochi who made this known on Monday. “The responsibility is in line with the Standard Operating Procedures of Elections in Nigeria�? Mr Oga Ochi, the Sector Commander, FCT Command, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. “We are already on board as far as this arrangement is concerned. So all the vehicles, whether they are engaged or temporarily used by INEC, will be fully certified by the FRSC. “The checklist is already provided for every driver that is going to drive for the election.

“The driver must pass through that checklist and has to successfully pass the certification exercise before the driver can be used and the same thing with the vehicle. “The vehicles must have met the standard that the checklist provided before they can be used for the election,�?he said. The FCT commander assured that the corps was fully prepared for any emergency before, during and after the elections. “There are cases where people line up for election and collapsing as a result of the time they waited to cast their votes and things like that.

“We are going to deploy our ambulances to respond to such emergencies during the period. “Our ambulances will be strategically located in the parts where we expect people to move en mass for voting in order to respond to any emergency. “At the same time, our tow trucks will also be deployed to remove whatever obstruction that could be created during the period. “This is to ensure that people move freely to their polling booths and all election materials are moved freely to their locations,�?Ochi added.

Nollywood actor, Chidi Mokeme has opened up on why he took a break from the movie industry. In an interview with Channels Television, Chidi Mokeme revealed that he was battling Bell’s Palsy. Bell’s Palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. In most cases, the weakness is temporary and significantly improves over weeks. Bell’s palsy may be a reaction to a viral infection. It rarely occurs more than once.

Likening the infection to stroke, Chidi revealed that it affected one side of his face, and as an actor, he couldn’t make public appearance. “I have been off the scene for a while after we did the promotional tour for 76. Before that when we were preparing to go to the UK on a trip for British International Film Festival. “I came down with something called Bell’s Palsy. It comes like a stroke and affects one side of your face. And this was something the doctor said was incurable. They didn’t know what caused it and how to treat it. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered 92,490 candidates to sit for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). JAMB said that 67,328 candidates had so far registered to sit for its mock examination. The board made this known in its Weekly Bulletin from the Office of the Registrar on Monday in Abuja. Meanwhile, JAMB will also commenced registration for the 2023 UTME on Jan. 14 to end Feb. 14. JAMB, while giving a breakdown of its registration fees said that two e-pins were available for purchase, as candidates had the option to either register to sit for its mock UTME or not. “As already effected in the UTME exercise, two e-pins are available, N5, 700 for without mock UTME; N6, 700 for with mock UTME, while the Direct Entry is N4,700. “Approved UTME fee remains N3, 500, reading text N500, the registration fee is N700, with N1000 for Computer Based Test (CBT) examination fee and an optional N1000 for mock examination for the candidates,�?it said.

The board says it remits to the CBT centres, on a weekly basis what is due to them, adding that the measure is put in place to stop extortion of candidates. It added that as part of measures put in place to enhance sanctity of the examination process, examinations would be allowed to take place an hour after the scheduled commencement time.

Former aide to ex president Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has appealed to former members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who recently dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to conceal their knowledge about the health status of the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Reno via his Twitter handle on Monday revealed this adding that it will be a breach of trust if the party chieftains reveal Tinubu’s health status to the opposition camp ahead of the 2023 general elections. According to him, anyone who could leak information about his former candidate or party would possibly do the same to his newfound home.

“I encourage those who joined our party from the APC not to reveal private details about Tinubu’s health that they learnt due to the relationship of trust he had with them. It is not right. The abducted Sole Administrator of the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Chris Ohizu, has been beheaded. The council boss was butchered on Sunday after his abductors allegedly received N6 million as ransom. Video of his beheading surfaced online on Sunday, where his killers insisted that there would be no election in the country. A source from the LGA, who did not want to be named, disclosed that the killers of the sole administrator published videos of the beheading with the phone of their victim on his WhatsApp status. The source said, “The sole administrator has been beheaded. We saw videos of how he was being beheaded on Sunday. His killers posted it with his phone on his own WhatsApp status. That was how people got to know that he was beheaded.

“The videos were horrible. He was tied and half naked before he was beheaded. That was a painful way to die. They butchered him after collecting N6 million ransom.�?/p>

When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and simply said “investigation is ongoing.�?/p> The slain sole administrator was kidnapped on Friday alongside two others.

The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) has embarked on a strike over salary increment, grounding international flights at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) on Monday. NAHCO handles check-in, boarding and ramp services for several international airlines including Air France/KLM, Qatar, Ethiopian Airlines, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Air. In a video circulating on social media, several passengers were stranded at the international airport, moving about helplessly with their luggage.

An affected passenger and aviation expert, Alex Nuba, said that NAHCO staff in the early hours of Monday walked out of the international airport, saying they were on strike and would not handle any passenger. “Even the Qatar flight I’m traveling with this morning landed and has returned to Doha as there’s no one to handle them,�?Nwuba said. He said passengers are frustrated as they have been kept outside to avoid a crisis and no information, announcements or emails was sent to passengers. Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organization, has issued a warning to politicians over the rise in verbal and physical abuse during election campaigns across Nigeria. The organization further urged political parties and their candidates to concentrate on issues regarding how they would address the myriad of challenges that the country was facing rather than coming up with statements and actions that “border on de-marketing of opponents and possibly causing bodily harm on other people,�?according to a statement issued on Sunday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi. The spokesman argued that certain politicians�?verbal attacks and those of their spokespeople were inciting their dishonest fans to attack rivals violently in a way that would result in bloodshed. According to the statement’s citation of Babagana Monguno, national security adviser, Nigeria documented 52 instances of political violence in 22 states between October 8 and November 9. “That was 52 acts of political violence within just one month! Monguno said this at an emergency meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja recently,�?Ajayi said. The statement added, “Candidates and political parties that have good programmes to execute would not resort to verbal or physical attacks. “We urge political parties and their candidates to focus on what plans they have to put an end or at least ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.

“They should let us know that they understand the enormity of the problems facing us and that they have solutions to these problems. An end should be put to mutual self-abuse either verbally or physically.�?/p> Electoral violence has taken on a frightening dimension in recent times in the wake of increased attacks on INEC facilities across the country. The commission stated in 2022 that between 2019 and May 24, 2021, its offices were attacked 41 times across 14 states. These included 20 cases of vandalisation, 18 cases of arson, and three cases involving both. INEC blamed 18 of the incidents on anti-police brutality (End SARS) demonstrators, 11 on “unknown gunmen�?and hoodlums, six on thuggery during elections, and the rest on bandits, Boko Haram insurgents, and post-election violence. The incidents were mostly concentrated in the Southeast and Southwest regions of the country. Seven of the cases took place in Imo, six in Osun, five in Akwa-Ibom, and four in Abia and Cross River. The rest were recorded in Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kaduna, Lagos, Ondo, and Taraba.

Apugo, while distancing himself from the governorship candidate of the APC in Abia State, Ikechi Emenike, said he would be backing individuals with a proven track record rather than any political party in the elections.

According to him, he told Emenike he would lose the forthcoming election both at the state and national level during a courtesy visit to his residence. He said: “Emenike and his team paid me a courtesy visit as a chieftain of the party to inform me of his governorship ambition as well as the proposed visit of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to Umuahia, Abia State.

Ovie Omo-Agege, the Delta State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has received some party leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected to APC in the state. The decampees who are said to be under the aegis of Delta Unity Group (DUG) were reportedly loyalists of the former Delta State governor, James Ibori. According to the former PDP loyalists, they dumped the party because of the alleged non-performance of the incumbent state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who is the vice presidential candidate of the PDP and to punish him and the party ahead of the elections. Omo-Agege received the new members into the APC during his campaign at St. George’s College in the Obinomba community, Ukwuani Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta North in the area.

Among the said Ibori loyalists who defected to the APC at the campaign rally were a former Commissioner and three-time former member, of the House of Representatives, Mercy Isei; member of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Commissioner, Judith Enamuotor; three-time member, House of Representatives, Daniel Reyenieju; former Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), Monday Igbuya; former member, House of Representatives, Olisa Imegwu; former Commissioner and former member, DTHA, Timi Tonye; former Commissioner and former member, DTHA, Evans Iwurie and a former chairman, Ethiope East LGA, Faith Majemite. It was also learnt that along with the leaders who formally defected into the APC were over 25,000 other members who were all loyalists of Ibori. She disclosed that she suspected it was the singer when he wore the watch, he claimed was also stolen while they were on their trip.

Reacting to her revelation, Skiibii’s management issued out a press release where they refuted the claims of him stealing from her. Skiibii claimed that the trip was paid for by Dorcas Fapson as a birthday gift, as she stated that she wouldn’t be around for his birthday. The singer had booked another villa for them to stay in, which he payed all the expenses. Skiibii also revealed that he had replaced Dorcas Fapson’s Iphone with a new one and had earlier bought her a MacBook pro laptop which she didn’t take to the trip. The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has declared Tuesday, January 24, a public holiday in the state for collection of Permanent Voters Cards. According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, the public holiday will help eligible voters in the state collect their PVCs at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) designated centres in their respective Local Government Areas. It read, “The importance of the forthcoming elections cannot be overemphasised. There is an urgent need for us to address the low rate of PVCs collection in the Southwest. Beyond partisan lines, it is imperative that our people understand that the PVC is their license to enthrone desired political leadership. “We are constrained to take this decision to enable our people take this advantage and collect their PVCs. We all must exercise our civic responsibilities.

“All political appointees and other government functionaries are also directed to return to their local governments and wards to encourage our people to collect their PVCs.�?/p>

The National Conscience Party (NCP) has endorsed the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as its choice candidate for the February 2023 presidential polls. Following their endorsement of the former Anambra governor for presidency, the NCP has therefore collapsed its structures into the LP. The party said in Enugu State, during the weekend that it took the decision to endorse Obi because of his capacity to lead Nigeria to the promised land. The NCP national chairman, Tanko Yinusa, while declaring support for Obi, promised to mobilise all his party members and supporters nationwide to vote for the Labour Party presidential candidate.

On reason for collapsing their structure for LP, Tanko said “we both share the same philosophy and manifesto�?adding that “Peter Obi has all it takes to earn the trust and confidence of our party�? The endorsement comes a few weeks after Nigeria Presidential Project (NPP) 2023 also declared its support for the LP flag-bearer, among several other eminent Nigerians including former President Olusegun Obasanjo. NCP was formed in 1994 but was prevented from standing in elections until 2003 when it won a legal battle to be able to do so. In the presidential election of that year the party’s candidate, Gani Fawehinmi, came fifth, polling 161,333 votes.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party on Sunday said the much feared Sambisa forest will be turned into agricultural land to aid production if elected as President. The former Anambra State governor who stated this while addressing supporters in Kano State during his presidential campaign also promised to secure and free the nation from parallel government by criminals.

He said, “I promise to secure and protect the people of Nigeria. We will ensure that the enemy and criminals are not stronger than the government. We will have one government. And they will not have space in it. We will secure Nigerians. We will unite Nigeria.�?/p> While promising to convert the Sambisa forest to agricultural land and turn the country from a consumption nation to production nation as well as boost its export, he said “Nigeria is not producing anything. They tell you the rate of exchange is N700 to this, it is not true, when we stop stealing it will come down.

“We use to export before but today we are hungry. How can we be hungry? We have the land. The uncultivated land in the north is what I want to cultivate. “They said the Sambisa forest is our problem because there is a problem in Borno State, no we will convert it to agricultural land. The Sambisa forest is 60,000 square kilometres of land, Israel is 22.1 square kilometres, so the Sambisa forest is two times size of Israel, we cannot allow it to be like that. It won’t cause trouble for us instead it will be a source of production for us. We can no longer continue. The total export of Nigeria last year, a country of 200 million living on 923,000 square kilometres is 18.9 trillion, if you convert it by 650 is about 30 billion. We cannot take it. Nigeria will increase in export, we will turn this place from agriculture to industrialization and export. He also said he has what it takes to lead the North out of poverty. “Let me assure you that I will solve the problem of the North. I will take them out of poverty. I know what to do with the mass uncultivated lands in the North. “Kano you see today is a ghost of what Kano used to be. Kano has now become a place you breed hunger and poverty. We want to move the country from consumption to production,�?Obi said.

Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has declared that no amount of fake news will stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, from winning next month’s election. Bello stated this yesterday while debunking reports that he had dumped Tinubu’s presidential campaign train. Bello, who featured on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, said his support for Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, remains unwavering and undiluted. Claims from a national daily stated that the Kogi State governor had withdrawn his support for Tinubu against the backdrop of permutations in Kogi politics. The report claimed the governor was suspicious that the lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, James Faleke, may contest the 2024 APC governorship ticket in Kogi State with Tinubu’s backing. The Kogi governor was appointed the National Youth Coordinator of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in September last year in a letter addressed to him and signed by Tinubu. However, reacting to the report of him distancing himself from the APC campaign, Bello, who described it as fake news, as he called on relevant authorities to ensure that purveyors of such fake news are dealt with, adding that he remained a foremost mobiliser of young voters for Tinubu.

He said, “I myself woke up this morning to see that particular fake news in the air today and there is no smoke without fire, and in this particular instance, I’m sure and the fire is prepared and fired in the air but, you know, surely that it cannot be sustained. It is most unfortunate and I’m urging all the law enforcement agencies (to get those behind it).�?/p> The APC Youth Coordinator called on security agencies, regulatory bodies regarding journalism and media practitioners practicing in Nigeria, to live up to their responsibilities and quickly take actions against these people. “The current electoral laws even empower INEC to investigate things like this and prosecute the liars. These perpetrators must not go unpunished as far as electoral laws are concerned.

“I’m adequately reassuring millions of Nigerians youths and Nigerians, our followers, as well as supporters within and across the world that I remain the very supporter, mobiliser, a campaigner and driver of votes for our leader and the president-in-waiting Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu-Shetima, the flag bearers of our great party, the APC. Of course, every Nigerian knows that as far as this election is concerned because of the demographic I represent and across the globe.�?/p> The governor gave the management of the newspaper 24 hours to retract that particular story, tender a public apology and give it a lot of publicity, failing which he would consider legal action. Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, in a statement on Sunday, also described the report as fake news. He said, “The story is maliciously false and a figment of the imagination of it’s author and sponsors. “Governor Yahaya Bello who serves as the national youth coordinator of the Tinubu-Shettima presidential campaign council, is a solid, resourceful and committed campaigner for our party’s candidate, leading a massively successful outreach to youth voters across the country,�?he added.
